GRADE 6 COURSE OUTLINE

Welcome to Foods/Fashion class! You will be learning some basic cooking skills that you can use at home such as measuring and reading a recipe, how to use an oven and microwave, and cleaning up. You will also learn how to safely work in the kitchen. Our food preparation focuses on choosing and preparing healthy snack foods with an emphasis on breakfast foods.  We will learn about making good nutritional choices based on the Canada Food Guide.

As part of your mark, you get to plan and complete two home cooking activities. This assignment includes selecting the menu, cooking and cleaning up. Home cooking recipes must require measuring in preparation and do not include prepackaged or frozen foods that require little or no special preparation (such as chicken strips or canned soup). Your home cooking assignments are due two weeks before the end of term.

You will also learn  basic hand sewing stitches, button application and complete a hand sewn project for the final assignment.

It is important that you carefully follow classroom and lab rules. This includes being to class on time, and being cooperative and responsible. Irresponsible behaviour will not be tolerated and will result in the loss of cooking privileges.
